Beowulf and Wiglaf the honorable

http://www.beowulftranslations.net/dragon1-200-150.jpg

This is Beowulf and Wiglaf. Wiglaf is the only person that stood true to his word to Beowulf. Wiglaf along with others promised to Beowulf that they would stand by him until the end. But when Beowulf, everyone but Wiglaf ran. Wiglaf stayed behind and helped Beowulf defeat the dragon. When Beowulf asked Wiglaf to go get him some jewels so he can die holding the treasure that he has won, Wiglaf goes to get some treasure and brings it back to Beowulf; there Wiglaf stays beside of Beowulf until he finally dies.

This is Beowulf. He defeated Grendel, Grendel's mother and the dragon. He is very courageous and bold. He left his home to go help some people that he didn't even know so that maybe he can get his name out to other people. After he defeats Grendel's mother, the people of Herot make him their king and he rules for 50 years. When he goes to fight the dragon, he gets hurt and dies after he has slayed the dragon.

Beowulf according to ME!

Beowulf started out in the book being a character who acted like he wasn't scared of anything. He went the Herot to help them defeat a monster. When he did defeat Grendel, he bragged about it. When Beowulf defeated Grendel's mother, he bragged. He is a very bostful character and narcissistic type of guy. To me characters who are heros, should be bostful, they should be laid bakc and act like they don't care if they get regonized or not. When the characters act like this, they are more likely to get regonition than those who are bostful.
At the end of the book, Beowulf finally realizes that he isn't invincible. He gets kind of scared when he finds out that the people of Herot that made him their king, now wants him to defeat a dragon that has a lot of treasures hid behind him. So when Beowulf goes to defeat this dragon, he gets hurt and dies. Right before he dies, he isn't bostful or narcissistic, he is humble and meek and just wants to have the jewels and treasures beside of him so that he can die remembering how many victories he has had.

Grendel the Terrible Monster!!!

http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/grendel.jpg

This is a picture of Grendel the monster that was terrorizing the town in which Beowulf went to help. As you can see, Grendel has sharp claws and teeth, a weird looking face, and is very hairy. He would go around the town after everybody went to sleep, eating people until he was full and then he went back to his swamp where he lived. The swamp was dark and mucky. Hardly anybody went to find Grendel because it was scary just going to the swamp.

FEARFUL! after so many years!?

"I've never know fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me." (page 52, lines 607-611)
This is what Beowulf says to all of his followers right before he goes off to battle the dragon. He is trying to hide that he is a little bit scared but at the same time his is trying to hold up his composure. Everyone knows him as being the Beowulf that isn't scared of anything. But as he has gotten older and his body weaker, he knows that there is a good chance that he may not be able to defeat the beast. But he stands strong, says goodbye to all of his followers and takes some of his soliders with him.

Friendship talk or pep talk?

"Beowulf you've come to us in friendship.... Let us toast your victories, and talk of the future." (page 38-39, lines 191-224)
This is a quote that Hrothgar said to Beowulf. He was saying that Beowulf is known throughout the place as a man with many victories over monsters. He has left his home to come to this place to help people that isn't even his tribe, to defeat a monster that has been terrorizing their people. So they are going to drink to and talk about his many victories while also talking about how he is going to defeat Grendel.

Good or Evil??? That is the question!!

Beowulf strays from his home to another city to help them defeat a horrible monster, named Grendel, that is terrorizing them. Beowulf goes to this monster to fight him and sees him eating human beings. Beowulf fights Grendel and defeats him and then goes to fight Grendel's mother. Once again Beowulf defeats his foe, except this time, he kills her with her own sword. Boewulf becomes the king of the nation. 50 years later he goes to try to defeat a dragon that has lots of treaure and is hiding it in his cave. Like always Beowulf defeats this foe but gets hurt. After the battle, Beowulf tells his only companion to go get some of the treasure so that he may enjoy it before he dies. So Wiglaf goes to get some treasure and brings it back to Beowulf. Beowulf dies soon after Wiglaf brings back the treasure.
